JOHN’S APPROACH TO ACTING WAS ALL SO NEW

Watching the artistry of Peter Falk as Columbo is one of my fondest childhood tv watching memories.  For that reason, hearing how much respect and admiration he had for John Cassavetes has a more profound effect on me. The way he describes his experience working with Mr. Cassavetes is transformative:

…John’s approach to acting was all so new it was also original.  It was also unfamiliar… I was fighting it you know.  And I wanted to do what I was used to doing.  Because during “Husbands,” I could kill him.  I wanted to kill him…I didn’t understand what the hell I was doing.  I didn’t understand the picture.  I didn’t know what i was doing,  And I started out, I tried to be polite.  So I said to him, John, I just want to say this, I’d like to work with you again as an actor.  But as a director, never do you hear, what i’m saying never, never…By the time we got done with the husbands um, I had second thoughts…

I said, “John. I gotta go with you again. Because I might have been wrong the first time. Because the first time, I didn’t understand a word you said and I want to try again…”
